The interview no-show problem in the UAE, and how in-platform video helps
No-shows usually aren't rudeness. They're traffic, shift work, a better offer, and a first round that cost the candidate half a day.
Every UAE hiring manager has sat in a meeting room at 11am for someone who never arrived. It's usually read as a character flaw. Mostly it's structural, and the structure is something you control more than the candidate does.
Why people don't turn up
- Cost of attendance: an in-person first round in Dubai can mean two hours of travel, parking and a half-day of leave for a 30-minute chat.
- Employed candidates can't easily take that time without their current employer noticing.
- Shift workers in retail, hospitality and logistics genuinely can't move a shift at short notice.
- They accepted something else, and telling you feels worse than not telling you.
- The invitation was ambiguous: unclear location, no parking instructions, no name to ask for at reception.
What in-platform video changes
It removes the cost of attendance for the first round, which is where nearly all no-shows happen. A 25-minute call from a car park during a break is something a shift supervisor can actually do. No travel, no leave, no dress rehearsal — and no app to install or account to create, because the room opens in the browser inside the platform where the conversation already lives.
It also keeps everything in one place: the match, the score and the reason, the messages and the interview room. Nobody is hunting through WhatsApp for a link, and there's no confusion about which meeting tool this employer uses.
The rest of the fix is process
- Offer two or three slots rather than assigning one, including one outside standard hours for shift workers.
- Confirm the same day and again 24 hours before, on the channel they actually reply on.
- Keep first rounds to 25 minutes and say so — short, specific commitments get honoured.
- Say what the call will cover and who will be on it.
- Make cancelling easy. A candidate who can withdraw in one tap will, and that's a better outcome than an empty room.
Save in-person rounds for stage two, when both sides have reason to invest half a day. On Scouting, video rounds run inside the platform for candidates you've unlocked, which keeps the whole first stage low-friction for everyone.
